Choose your next pair of glasses using 3D and an iPad

Glasses.com has launched a cool and interesting new way to try on sunglasses without having actually having to try on sunglasses. The company has created a 3D virtual try-on technology that captures your face in 3D graphics and then overlays glasses on your virtual face. It offers a huge collection of sunglasses of try without even feeling the need to step into a store.

The soon-to-be-released app is called Glasses.com 3D Fit from Glasses.com, a new venture from 1-800-Contacts. It uses augmented reality to find out how dozens of pairs of glasses look on your 3D model.

Here’s how it works. Download the Glasses.com 3D Fit and after opening the app stand in front of your iPad. Now the app captures your face by taking a series of photos to create an accurate 3D model of your face, allowing you to see how you look in various styles of frames from different angles. For this you need to stay still and turn your head slowly from side to side so that the iPad’s camera captures your face from different angles. The app then combines the images together into a 3D rendering in a relatively short time. Once the app has a good picture of your face, you can play around with it, by swiping sideways to see the side of your face. Then you can try on different sunglasses, four at a time.

The app uses OpenGL ES, the graphics standard that allows an app to use a device’s 3D graphics processors to render an image, rather than the central processing unit. The graphics processor is much faster and makes for fluid motion graphics in the app. You can even see the shadows the glasses would cast on your face. If you move the glasses, the shadows move too.

The speed of the 3D is never an issue so you can view the image with sunglasses on through different angles and by zooming in and out.  In addition, you can also choose to add Instagram-like filters to see how the glasses would look like under different lighting conditions.
