Best cases for iPad 2

By: Aseem Gaurav on December 27, 2011

1. Joby gorillamobile Yogi for iPad 2: Joby with its unique design for iPad 2 stand makes a mark of its own in a sea of cases. The company uses its signature ball joint design to offer two highly flexible legs that can be bent or used to grab onto objects. You can use the stand to keep your slate upright on a table, stretch the legs fully outwards into lines or make it slant at an angle. All you need to do is to snap the device into the reinforced-plastic shell. Its modular clip design makes it easy for you to switch the device from portrait to landscape mode. A gray lock button keeps it securely in place. The case is durable and is made up of lightweight polycarbonate. Some of its uses are: bending its knobby legs around your own leg while sitting or putting it back of the car sear for movie viewing. The case offer real flexibility to you to place your iPad case in whichever way you like but lacks the opportunity to protect the front face of the device.

2. Sena Folio iPad 2 Case: This case is meant to give your favourite gadget a professional and fashion-forward look. Full-grained Napa leather gives the case a soft feel and fine details including high stitch count along the edges improves the case’s attractiveness. The good thing about leather is that more you use it – the more you start loving it. In terms of functionality, the case comes with an integrated recessed collapsible back stand that helps you watch videos. So if you are in office and want to use it on a desk besides your laptop or PC, then it is a good choice. The case has got a snap closure on the back and front to keep the device sturdy. All the buttons and ports are still aligned and usable. For $99.99, the Sena Folio Case for iPad is not at all cheap.

3. The Dodocase: It is a nice case that would be appealing to those who appreciate good design. Built with bookbinding materials, the case is solid and looks great. There’s a bamboo frame on the inside to hold your iPad which has foam pads at its four corners that provide pressure on the corners of your iPad to hold it in place. The case may prove to be good when you hold it in horizontal and vertical positions, but holding it upside-down may not be a good idea. The outside of the case comes with faux leather, with the innercase lined with any one of eight colors. The top and bottom of the frame are cut away to expose the controls, speaker and dock connector. The bamboo used to construct the DodoCase is really light, so despite its large size, it doesn’t weight too much. The case is also good for viewing videos and typing as when you flip the cover over, it can be used to prop your iPad.

Top 10 apps of 2011 that users downloaded the most

By: Aseem Gaurav on December 22, 2011

2011 was a year for mobile apps and as per an estimate there are over one million apps across seven major app stores (in order, in the US: App Store for iPhone, Android Market, App Store for iPad, BlackBerry App World, Nokia Ovi Store, Windows Phone Marketplace and Amazon Appstore).

The pace of addition of apps on a daily basis is extremely fast and no doubt the market is getting matured with each passing day. No doubt the competition is growing in this segment which is now more focused towards freemium model (free applications).

A report by Distimo suggests that half of the revenue associated with the 200 top-grossing apps in the App Store for iPhone is now based on a freemium model. This is even higher for the Android marketplace (65 per cent).

It reports that the Android Market is home to over 220,000 free apps, as compared to 190,000 apps available for free for the App Store for iPhone.

Distimo further compiled a list of most downloaded apps of the year around the globe, and across all app store.

By: Aseem Gaurav on December 19, 2011

Everyone's favorite bearded fat man, Santa Claus, is no stranger to latest gadgets and gizmos. The latest ad released by Apple shows Santa Claus with an iPhone 4S using Siri, the smart iPhone personal voice assistant to plan his trip and help him deliver gifts to children around the world.

The new TV commercial shows Santa using Siri, to find your find directions to Charlie Grants house and local weather conditions on Christmas Eve. It then appears that Santa Claus started feeling cold, so he asks Siri just how cold it is in Cleveland tonight ... "Really cold .... down to about 14 degrees," replies Siri and shows the weather information. The old white bearded guy even gets a message from Mrs Claus saying go easy on the cookies.

The technology-savvy Santa further asks the voice assistant "How does the rest of my day look" and Siri responds "You have 3.7 billion appointments.

The idea behind Apple launching this add to give a boost to iPhone 4S sales this festive season and what’s the better way than to rope in Santa and discuss the important points of Siri. So will you buy an iPhone 4S this Christmas?

Sony launches tablets S & P in India

By: Aseem Gaurav on December 15, 2011

Looking at the growing computer tablet market in India, Electronic consumer device maker Sony has stepped on the gas to launch its two Android tablets for the Indian market, Tablet S and Tablet P. Though the Tablet S has been available for consumers in India for some time now, it has now become officially available.

Both the tablets run on Android 2.3.2 Gingerbread operating system from Google, and come with 1GB of RAM and 5-megapixel cameras.

The first device Sony S is a rectangular slab with 9.4 inch LCD touchscreen display offering 1280x800 pixels resolution. The tablet S is available in two variants - 16 GB Wi-Fi only model and 16 GB 3G + Wi-Fi model. The first version costs Rs 29,990 and the later is priced at Rs 33,990 and will be available by mid January 2012. It has a 5000mAh Li-ion battery that can last up to 8 hours. The Tablet has a 1GHz Cortex- A9 dual-core processor and has 1GB of RAM. Further, it comes with 16GB of internal memory that can be expanded an additional 32GB with a SD card. The dimensions of the device are 241.2mm x 174.3mm x 10.1-20.6mm and as compared to iPad 2’s weight of 601 grams, the tablet S weighs 598 grams.

In terms of design, Tablet S looks different from other tablets due to its uniquely asymmetric design that shifts the center of balance to one side. It has wedge-shape, which gives you the feeling of paper that’s been folded over. Such a curve at the bottom of the tablet means that is not difficult to hold and the thick part melting into a thin panel on the other side makes it easier to type when placed on the ground. You can find the power key with the volume rocker on the right side while the 3.5 mm port, the USB port and the SD car is on the left side of the tablet.

The tablet has Wi-Fi connectivity, infra-red remote control which is capable of controlling TV, Blu-ray Disc™ player, HiFi system, and even the set-top box. It also comes with DLNA that allows you to share the videos, photos and music clips to home entertainment devices. It even has an amazing TruBlack™ panel which displays vibrant colors and good image quality. There's a 5-megapixel camera on the tablet's back and a 0.3-megapixel camera for video up front. The tablet’s music player music player not only has a great cover art view, it analyzes your music with a technology called "SensMe" to create Pandora/Genius-style automatic playlists of music that sounds good together.

On the other hand, the Tablet P has an unusual clamshell design (folding design) for enhanced handling and easy use. Besides portability, the design offers better grip to readers and movie viewers. It has dual 5.5 inch, 1,024x480-pixel touchscreen, and the device is powered by a 1 GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 mobile processor. It comes with 4GB of internal memory that can be expanded an additional 32GB with a microSD card. The Tablet P runs on the Android 3.2 Honeycomb OS. The dimensions of the device are 180mm x 158mm x 14mm when opened and 180mm x 79mm x 28mm when closed and it weighs just 372 grams. It also supports a microSD card up to 32GB. Costing Rs 36,990, the tablet will be available in the Indian market by mid January 2012.

The users can play original PlayStation titles on the Tablets since both the tablets are first series of PlayStation certified Tablets. Some of the games that are preinstalled are: Crash Bandicoot and Pinball Heroes.

Further, these tablets come with universal remote feature that operates a host of gadgets and appliances with the help of built-in infra red sensor.

Sound Cover, an iPad 2 case with built-in speakers

By: Aseem Gaurav on December 13, 2011

Petur Olafsson’s Sound Cover project offers a combination of an iPad case with a speaker hidden in the case’s front cover. The cover is super-thin and super-loud and uses NXT speaker technology – that allows speakers to take the shape of flat panels.

Petur is looking to raise $35,000 via Kickstarter to put the Sound Cover into production. Pledging at least $110 will give you a Sound Cover while for $165 you’ll get the Bluetooth version.

The case will even wake and sleep your iPad as it opens and closes, using the magic of magnets.

iPad 3 expected by March, April: Reports

By: Aseem Gaurav on December 12, 2011

There are rumours in the tech world that the third generation of iPad will be out in nearly three to four months’ time after going into production in January next year.

Taipei-based Digitimes claims that component manufacturers are gearing up for a slated March or April release and have started supplying next-gen iPad parts to original equipment manufacturers.

Reports further say that as manufacturers gear up for the new device from Apple, there will be a corresponding decline of 4-5 million units of iPad during the first quarter of 2012. Production of the new iPads is expected to reach 9.5-9.8 million units in the first quarter.

However, in the first quarter, Apple will produce around 14 to 15 million units of iPad 2.

As of now, the information appears to be just rumours and anything concrete will emerge later on.

What to expect in iPad 3:

-- No doubt everyone wish everything to be crammed up in the new device. However, the iPad 3 may sport XVGA touch-screen running at a resolution of 2048*1536. The slightly thicker device should include an A6 chip and -- perhaps -- a larger capacity battery.

-- LTE support may be included after all the delays.
